“It is with deep sadness that the House of Chanel announces the passing of Karl Lagerfeld, the Creative Director for the Chanel Fashion House since 1983,” the fashion house’s official statement.
Karl Lagerfeld, the iconic designer and creative
director at Chanel, has passed away after a period of ill health.
The German designer had a long, successful, and at times
controversial, career in fashion after starting out under
the guidance of Pierre Balmain, founder of Balmain's
fashion house in the 1950s. He was an internationally
acclaimed ambassador of French elegance transforming
the world of fashion and will continue to influence
generations of designers to come.
We have drawn together some of his signature
looks and his best quotes to honour the true fashion legend.
With a work ethic like no other lets celebrate
and learn from a man who was clearly ahead of his time.
“Change is the healthiest way to survive”
“People who say that yesterday was better than today are ultimately devaluing their own existence.” - living in the moment
“Books are a hard-bound drug with no danger of an overdose. I am the happy victim of books.”
"Black, like white, is the best colour. They both look great with added colour touches like red."
“One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.”
“People who do a job that claims to be creative have to be alone to recharge their batteries. You can’t live 24 hours a day in the spotlight and remain creative. For people like me, solitude is a victory.” - solitude
“It’s up to you to make every day as perfect as possible – it’s a question of will and discipline.” - perfection
“I do my job like I breathe — so if I can’t breathe
I’m in trouble.” - work ethic
"Please don't say I work hard. Nobody is forced to do
this job and if they don't like it, they should do another one.
If it's too much, do something else. But don't start doing it
and then say, 'Aaaah, it's too much'. Because a lot of people
depend on it"
“Don’t sacrifice yourself too much, because if you
sacrifice too much there’s nothing else you can give
and nobody will care for you.”
“I am very boring but it has allowed me to survive better
than other people. If you don’t drink, you don’t smoke,
and you don’t do drugs, and you’re not missing it
and never even wanted it, and you sleep for seven hours.
I tell you, life is quite pleasant.”
